Apple turning Japanese
The Apple iPhone is becoming a reality in the near future. Both ThinkSecret and Apple Insider have the rumors as we as myself. But what is it that Apple sees so important in a iTunes controlled phone download experience?.
The answer lies in the very important Japanese market:
But even the market-leading iTunes store holds only about 5 percent of the online song distribution market in Japan, where music lovers opt to download tunes to mobile phones from phone operators like Japan’s KDDI.
Apple pushes Oricon to quit PC music downloads
Although North America has taken to the iPod with the desktop download in spades, the Japanese are mobile centric. They want to consume their music through the mobile phone rather than through the desktop.
This is also an important outlet for the European market as well. Both Japan and the EU have more sophisticated 3G mobile networks than the United States and have proven that they are far more aggressive with mobile technology.
In order for Apple to dominate the Asian and European markets, they need to bring the iTunes/iPod experience to mobile phones. It is also no coincidence that Apple will offer the iPhone at Cingular. This is because a GSM infrastructure is far more important for them than the CDMA system that is pretty much only used in North America.
