Microsoft Argo Zune Pyxis a prediction of the future?

Submitted by on September 4, 2006 One Comment

The Microsoft Zune Player is actually the Toshiba Project called Pyxis. According to Wikipedia:

Pyxis (Latin for box as in Pyxis Navigatum [lit. Sailor's Box, a compass]) is a minor southern constellation introduced by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille under the name Pyxis Nautica. Argo Navis (or simply Argo) was a large southern constellation representing the Argo, the ship used by Jason and the Argonauts in Greek mythology. The constellation Pyxis (the compass) occupies an area which in antiquity was considered part of Argo’s mast.

According to Beta News, the terms Argo, Pyxis, Alexandria and Zune are all being used:

The entire initiative falls under the name “Project Argo,” and insiders believe Microsoft is working on at least two portable players. Zune, which first surfaced in June, is believed to be the iPod-like device that would include wireless connectivity in a design very reminiscent of the Apple iPod.

Beta News

The overall project is called Argo, a consellation of which Pyxis was the mast, but I understand that is no longer so. However it would be interesting to see the story of Jason and the Argonauts and the quest for the Golden Fleece bears some modern day interpretation.

  • Jason and the Argonauts arrive on the Island Lemnos. Lemnos was inhabited by a race of women who killed their husbands off. Jason and the Argonauts then busy screw everything in a skirt and then left.
  • Jason et al head for Kyzicos where they were dined by the Doliones. After a good feed, they leave, lose their bearings and land back where they starrted. In the darkness the Doliones take them for enemies and they start fighting each other and killed off a number of locals until they realize what they did then scarpered off the Island.
  • Finally the Argos reach Phineus of Salmydessus. Phineus could look into the future but he was haunted by the Harpies. Jason kills off the Harpies and Phineus told them where the Fleece was in Colchis.
  • Jason et al arrive in Colchis tomeet the King Aeetes. Aeetes was none too happy but said that Jason could have the Fleece if he did a few tasks. With the help of Medea he had to content with fire breathing oxen, an army of warriors, and a drowsy dragon. He successfully nabbed the Fleece and headed back to Greece.
  • On the way back they had to battle Sirens, the odd Talo to get back to Pelias. Pelias was chopped by by his daughters, and Jason and Medea took off to Corinth. Jason did the dirty on Medea and married Creusa.
  • Because he dumped Medea, Jason lost his favour with Hera and he died a lonely and unhappy man with no friends. He was asleep under the stern of the Argo, which was rotten, and it fell on him, killing him instantly. It was said that the manner of his death was due to the gods cursing him for breaking his promise to Medea.

Yep sure sounds like the whole “Playsforsure” Partner mess to me.
