War of Words breaks out over title of Northern Indie Capital

Edmunton

Canada although it’s is small in population, only 33 Million, it has a large number of Cities vying for the title of Indie Capital. The powerhouses of Toronto and Montreal and to a lesser extent Vancouver, are being challenged by the smaller cities of Edmunton and Calgary. Bryan Carroll from Vue Weekly:

Robert Everett-Green is a Toronto based writer for the Globe and Mail. In fact, you might thank him for the spotlight Edmonton has recently found itself in, because he’s the guy who started it all with the vociferous praise he heaped upon E-town in a Globe article earlier this year. Everett-Green, who was born in Edmonton but left at a young age, is quick to point towards the spirit of cooperation that exists in Edmonton as the basis for our healthy local scene.

“Edmonton has a coherent scene that supports each other, [which] isn’t always a feature of life in a place like Toronto,” he says. To illustrate this point, Everett-Green mentions local rapper Cadence Weapon, who enjoys what he calls an interestingly high level of support within Edmonton’s indie scene. If he had emerged from Toronto, suggests Everett-Green, he would most likely find himself restricted to the heavily regimented hip-hop scene within that city.

The larger centers have the pool of population, for both artist and audience, to host a viable market for independent talent but Calgary and Edmunton’s increasing economic wealth is drawing a greater crowd.

A new tool however has been dropped in the hands of the independent artist, and that is the power of the Internet to help build an audience. There is also a growing army of technical people who are only too willing to find ways to circumvent the existing corporate distribution and help build for an online audience. All the major centers in Canada have teams of people working on the new music distribution model on the that will allow the best musicials to realize their goals.
