Production Video #2 from the set of THE HOBBIT, 8 July 2011. Peter Jackson and company gives us an inside look on the continuing production of The Hobbit. The production is based in Miramar Studios in Wellington New Zealand and various locations around New Zealand.

The movie is to be released for Christmas 2012 and includes Hugo Weaving, Elijah Woods, Cate Blanchett, Stephen Fry and Martin Freeman among many others.

Sir Peter Jackson has released the first in what is a series of behind the scenes video logs of the making of “The Hobbit” movie, the fourth in the Lord of the Rings series of movies.

The 10-minute piece takes a walk through of Hobbiton otherwise known as the B Stage in Miramar Wellington, as well as the various departments that go into making a huge movie. Included in this is Sir Ian Mckellen and Martin Freeman (The Office). Of interest is the number of people personally invested in the success of the movie.

Murray Hewitt AKA Rhys Darby is interviewed for the “Shit people want to hear”. Rhys talks about comedy, colour, whales and changing your name among many other things.

Rhys is one of New Zealand’s most successful comic actor with roles opposite Phillip Seymore Hoffman, Jim Carey and Dave Foley to name a few. His particular style is perhaps personified as an ultimate kiwi bloke, the blokes bloke. For example, his particular brand of humor involves a complete misunderstanding of human nature which of course doesn’t stop him from offering his version of the world.

Perhaps Rhys is an anti Jerry Seinfeld. Whereas Jerry makes observations based elements of truth (such as Rental Car Reservations), Murray makes observations based on pure falsehoods (such as Murray Band Manager).

Nonetheless the comic stylings of Rhys Darby makes him an original. Of course that is what we look for in great humor.

Controversial and convivial comic Air New Zealand mascot Rico this week laid down some tracks with celebrity artist and actor Snoop Dog in this entertaining video.

Snoop Dog (Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr) , who is famous for “Who am I” and “Gin and Juice”, invites Rico to his Los Angeles hotty-laden pad to jam on Rico’s luxury life on board an Air New Zealand 777 or hiking in the New Zealand bush.

Seriously, the Snoop Dog/Rico line up has garnished Air New Zealand face time on MTV:

Also it has been featured on Huffington Post, ABC, Wired, Rolling Stone among many others. The idea behind this is to push the brand into new and different places. Teaming up with cultural icons like Snoop Dogg allows Rico to do just that.

Air NZ Wine Awards 2010 (Video)

The Air New Zealand Wine Awards is the premier wine competition in New Zealand. It recognises excellence in winemaking throughout the country. The competition organised by New Zealand Winegrowers, the national organisation for the country’s 1,300 grape growers and winemakers.

107 gold medals have been awarded at this year’s Air New Zealand Wine Awards – the highest in the Awards’ history and up five from the 102 awarded last year. Pinot Noir received the most gold medals for the third year in a row (32), the most ever awarded for this varietal, followed by Sauvignon Blanc (14) and Chardonnay (14).

Pure medals were introduced in 2007 to acknowledge medal-winning wines that are 100 per cent sustainably grown and produced. Of the gold medals awarded this year, almost 40 per cent (39.2) are pure gold medals. “In addition, 13 of the 14 gold medals in the Sauvignon Blanc class are pure gold medals,” Mr Yorke said.

From this year, wines grown and entered from the 2010 vintage onwards had to be 100 per cent sustainably produced in both the vineyard and winery. This only applied to wines entered from the 2010 vintage. The introduction of the new criteria led to an increase of almost 140 per cent in sustainable entries over last year – moving from 261 to 621.

The 2010 Air New Zealand Wine Awards gala dinner will be held at SKYCITY Convention Centre on Saturday 20 November 2010

Paul’s latest album is “Wake up the Nation” was released in April 2010. It is the first of Weller’s albums since 1982 to feature contributions from Bruce Foxton, formerly of The Jam, someone he had not spoken to in 20 years. Foxton’s wife Pat died in 2009 from cancer and then on 5 May 2009, Foxton attended the funeral of Paul Weller’s father John, who was also instrumental in The Jam’s success.

Bollywood Comes to Queenstown (Video)

Queenstown is a lead character in Bollywood’s latest runaway box office hit, I Hate Luv Storys starring Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor. Movie goers in India and across the world got to see Luv Story for the first time this weekend.

I Hate Luv Storys – a romantic comedy starring Indian heart-throbs Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor – has been ranked India’s 12th best net grossing movie of all time on opening day. The movie, which premiered in India on Friday 2 July 2010, saw big city movie theatres filling to the brim. The film is also proving to be a big hit outside of India. Internationally, it has provided the biggest opening day ever for filmstar Imran Kahn.

The film tells the story of two Bollywood actors who fly to Queenstown, in New Zealand’s South Island, to shoot a film and end up falling in love. Director Punit Malhotra – who came New Zealand looking for “picture postcard locations” – also fell in love with Queenstown. “As a film maker in Queenstown you don’t have to hunt for good locations. The place itself is one giant exquisite locale,” Malhotra told H T Cafe magazine.

“We were looking for landscapes that resembled Switzerland in Hindi films from the nineties. I came across Queenstown in New Zealand … the place turned out to be perfect. We got an opportunity to shoot around Glenorchy the location for ‘Lord of the Rings’.” “It’s a little far from India but the journey is totally worth it.” he added.

Banana Booty is one of 10 grand-prize winners in HBO‘s Flight of the Conchords Lip Dub Fansterpiece contest.

The contest called for fans to submit short films designed to show reverance to the hit HBO comedy series.

Pitzer College senior Justin Weitzel just happened to have a gorilla suit in his car and came across the Flight of the Conchords Bilboard at the corner of Haight and Steiner St in San Francisco according to the Claremont Courier:

â€œIt hit me. It was a nice, natural frame, and I liked the ambiguity of the street corner. You couldnâ€™t tell what city it was in. I happened to have a gorilla suit, and I felt the urge to start dancing there.â€

The film was made on a laptp and webcam and used the software iStopMotion.

Mr Weitzel plays homage to the banana in his movie, very apropo for the gorilla theme.

Kiwi DreamGirls Cause Stir in Bollywood

Six Kiwi-Indian girls have been given the chance to perform with the leading lights of Bollywood including Aditi Bhagwat and Shiva Rindhani.

Sharmista Chakraborty and five other girls from Auckland have joined the cast to perform alongside leading stars of Indiaâ€™s Bollywood film industry in the musical “Dreamgirls of Bollywood”.

â€œIâ€™m really excited and looking forward to it. Itâ€™s something I havenâ€™t done before but I love dancing, I love being on stage,â€ says Sharmista. The 26-year-old, who emigrated from Kolkata (Calcutta), has been practicing classical Indian dance for over 20 years.

Dreamgirls tells the story of Sajili, a young girl living in a small town. Training as an Indian classical dancer, Sajili has been selected by her Indian dance teacher to carry on his lifeâ€™s work to all four corners of the entire country. However Sajili wants to become a Bollywood star â€¦ and be the greatest diva of them all.

Dreamgirls is playing at the Skycity Theatre Auckland from April 15th.

TV star Jessica Tovey stars in Australia’s top soap “Home and Away” but when she’s away in New Zealand she feels right at home.

Tovey, whose father is a Kiwi and mother is author Libby Gleeson, spoke to Sunday News:

And the 21-year-old admitted she would even leave New South Wales to settle in the South Island.

“I’m very proud to be half Kiwi,” Tovey told Sunday News. “I could definitely live in New Zealand.

“I do love Sydney and the city noise but I think New Zealand has this incredible calming effect on me and a much bigger appreciation for nature.

“Most of the family I have on my dad’s side live in Christchurch, including his mum and sister, (so) I’d probably live near Christchurch near my family.”

Other Australians of New Zealand descent include actor Russel Crowe and musician Keith Urban

Richard Taylor the the Weta Workshop team were honored this week at World Class New Zealand Awards.

Taylor co-founded special effects company Weta Workshop in 1994, along with Tania Rodger and film director Peter Jackson. Taylor has won five Oscars during a career for films such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy, King Kong and Heavenly Creatures.

The awards were presented on Wednesday night at aÂ gala dinner in Auckland:

For the last 15 years Weta Workshop – a special effects facility of which Taylor co-founded and is the creative director – has created models, makeup and monsters for movies like the Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong.

“He’s internationally recognised, he’s won five Oscars, so he’s hugely famous. He’s done such a fantastic job for New Zealand and really put New Zealand on the map,” says KEA’s global chairman Stephen Tindall.

The awards were organized by Kea New Zealand (of which Kiwibloke is a member) to promote World Class Excellence and creative talent in New Zealand.

Anna Paquin To Play Irena Sendler in TV Movie

Anna Paquin is playing Irena Sendler, a Polish resistance member during the Second World War, in a made for TV movie on CBS.

John Kent Harrison wrote the script and will direct. On November 14th, 2008 the U.S. film studio â€œHallmark Hall of Fameâ€, in cooperation with the film production company Gillham Road Productions Inc. started shooting the feature film â€œMiss Irenaâ€™s Childrenâ€in Riga, Latvia. Riga Old Town with its cobblestone streets and courtyards was chosen in the competition of eight cities as the most appropriate one for shooting the film about the events, which took place during World War II. It is the first time that a U.S. film studio shoots a film in Latvia. The movie’s title was updated. it’ll be released on April 19, with the title “The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler”.

Irena Sendler (Irena Sendlerowa; de domo KrzyÅ¼anowska; February 15, 1910 â€“ May 12, 2008)was a Polish Catholic social worker. During World War II, she was a member of the Polish Underground and theÂ resistance organization in Warsaw. Sendler saved 2,500 Jewish children by smuggling them out of the Warsaw Ghetto, providing false documents and sheltering them in individual or group children’s homes outside the ghetto. Her story was brought to light when students from Kansas found her story in a magazine and popularized it in a play, titled “Life in a Jar”.

Neither of you are from the UK, so how much knowledge did you have of pirate radio stations before this movie?
Rhys: “We had a pirate station in New Zealand, so I knew of them and their existence. At one point there were up to eight boats outside the legal limit blasting music out, then Radio 1 started and all the pirates seemed to get jobs there and music went mainstream.”

Lord of the Rings’ actor Craig Parker stars in a new series called Diplomatic Immunity on Television New Zealand.

Parker was born in Suva, Fiji. He is most famous for his role as Haldir of LÃ³rien in The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. He also does voice-overs for New Zealand documentaries and has been entertaining and meeting fans at various Lord of the Rings-related conventions for several years – for example, Ring*Con in Germany, which he has attended every year since its creation in 2002. His recent work has also involved voiceover work in the recent Power Rangers series since the filming moved to New Zealand.

New Zealand comic Rhys Darby interview on aussie TV show ROVE (with Rove McManus).

New Zealand stand-up comic, Rhys has gained fans around the world as Murray the Manager in Flight of the Conchords and Jim Carreys boss in the hit comedy Yes Man.

Probably best known for playing band manager Murray Hewitt in the Emmy-nominated hit TV series Flight of the Conchords, currently in its second series on-air. Rhys is also quite the film star playing Jim Carreys dorky boss in the international hit comedy Yes Man, and as one of the DJs in the comedy The Boat That Rocked, in cinemas next month, co-starring Rhys Ifans, Billy Nighy and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

A former soldier, he left the army in 1994 and went to uni, forming a comedy duo Rhysently Granted in 1996. After winning an open mic contest in Christchurch they went from performing in local venues to international comedy festivals. After performing his first solo show in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, he moved to London in 2003 quickly becoming a cult figure on the British comedy scene, and getting gigs throughout Europe, Iceland, The Falklands and recently the Middle East. Hes also written and performed in six plays since 2000, four were solo productions in which he played all the roles.
