The VW Polo Blue Motion that Richard Hammond raced from Basel to Blackpool in last years season of Top Gear is now up for sale in the UK Auto Trader (via Blackpool Gazette)

Now the car, which has just 5,500 miles on the clock – is for sale on the Auto Trader website with a price ticket of £11,990.

In the advert for the car, Autotrader said: “The Polo is not a powerful car, but it was chosen because it boasts an average fuel economy of 74.3mpg and a tank range of 736 miles.”

One of the most economical, if not fast, car’s on the European market today, the VW Polo has the distinction of being what Jeremy Clarkson describes as being the satan of all that is automotive evil, an Oil Burner.

On OLN in Canada is a program called Mantracker that I watch quite regularly. This is where experienced Search and Rescue tracker, Terry Grant from the Foothills Search and Rescue Team in Alberta tracks down contestants in the mountains of remote Canada. Each week he and a buddy track down two individuals who team to get to a finish line 40kms away from the start. Using only his tracking skills, looking for clues in the dirt and mud, he skillfully hunts his prey over the course of 36 hours.  He employs a technique of reading tracks called forensics. This is where elements are bought together to paint a picture of the prey’s whereabouts.

Meantime I am looking through all the accounts that I have online and realize that all tracks seem to lead back to my Gmail account. Aside from the obvious mail, flickr, Blogger, Google Sites, adwords, adsense, You Tube, and Maps, it is also attached to Facebook, Stumbleupon, Mybloglog, Gravator, Newsvine, Reddit, Digg and many others.

It would not take much for Google to employ forensics to create a full and complete view of my actvities online and paint a picture of how and what I do online to a much greater degree than what is possible from straight search logs. Indeed search logs only reflect about 10% of my activity and are exceedingly boring (most research on what to blog about).

What it does however is show to Google, and any other interested party, a complete picture of how and what I think on a wide range of subjects. It so happens that I commit many of those thoughts to blog postings, but there is plenty of stuff that I would prefer not or explicitly don’t express an opinion on.

The challenge will be in the future will be for the keepers of this information on the straight and narrow, to keep the information inside boundaries of what the information was originally intended for. Are we really ready for large corporations to know so much about us. We of course already surrender vast amounts of information to financial institutions but this is different. Are we to trust these companies at their word or will the time for legislation to protect users be nearing?.

With a few simple clicks of the mouse, a whole new world of detail can pervade one’s existence and create opportunities for the less scrupulous of us. With the addition of location information along with credit information, corporations can track to an even greater depth what you can and cannot do.

Recently it was reported in the New York Times that American Express was changing your credit limit based on where and whom you shop with:

In recent months, American Express has gone far beyond simply checking your credit score and making sure you pay on time. The company has been looking at home prices in your area, the type of mortgage lender you’re using and whether small-business card customers work in an industry under siege. It has also been looking at how you spend your money, searching for patterns or similarities to other customers who have trouble paying their bills.

Not only is it possible to see your transactions at the local Cash Converters or Value Village, simply being in the vicinity of a Dollar Store makes you a credit risk. This ability will soon be available to any developer:

In the meantime, with Latitude Google is moving to commoditize both the map information and the location beacon. Google is using triangulation data from cellular networks, and Wi-Fi positioning along with GPS data for its Latitude offering. It is only a matter of time before this location information is made available to other developers for free, especially Android app developers. After all, Google needs apps for its Android platform, and more importantly it needs developers to think differently.

The issues do not stop at intrusive corporations, according to Privacy International it can also extend to unwanted attention from unsavory types:

“The company has a long way to go before it can capture the trust of phone users. As it stands right now, Latitude could be a gift to stalkers, prying employers, jealous partners and obsessive friends. The dangers to a user’s privacy and security are as limitless as the imagination of those who would abuse this technology.”

Couple that with long time Google wannabe, Microsoft Live Maps and you have a potential problem waiting to happen.

Black Grace – a New Zealand slang term for courage and bravura – began 13 years ago as an all-male troupe with a South Pacific accent is taking North America (and Toronto in particular) by storm. The recipient of numerous acclaim from the likes of the Boston Globe and the New York Times they have been performing to large audiences on the current tour.

In 2005, the company celebrated its tenth anniversary and performed to sell-out seasons in Auckland, followed by an extensive tour of the US and Mexico.

The key to Black Grace’s success are their unique mix of contemporary and tradition Polynesian dance and rhythm. The Band Katchafire, all the way from Hamilton New Zealand, got their name from Bob Marley’s album “Catch a Fire”. Bob was the inspiration for this band even before it’s formation in mid 1997.

A household name in New Zealand, Katchafire has ridden the unexpecting wave of reggae popularity in Kiwiland:

Indeed—since the ’70s, New Zealand reggae has had a number of well-regarded bands, such as the legendary Herbs and Twelve Tribes of Israel. Within the Maori community, Marley’s appearance fanned the flames of a burgeoning Rastafarian movement that reached full blaze in the ’80s. It’s this rich history that Katchafire founder, drummer Jordan Bell, tapped into in 1997, when he recruited his son Logan and a handful of fellow players to form the band.

Though the group began as a Bob Marley tribute band, the members quickly began writing their own material, drawing deep upon early ska and reggae and giving it a breezy, modern flair. Within a few years—and after an auspicious break on a TV talent show that led to a recording deal—the band became one of New Zealand’s biggest acts, going from playing tiny nightclubs to large venues in short order. Logan Bell says that the transition from cover band to New Zealand phenomenon was remarkably smooth.

Katcha fire has been touring North America recently to expand their audience and tap into a growing resurgence of reggae popularity. The song “Love Letter” (below) has a particular following. It is clearly influenced by the Wailers and Eddie Grant among others.

The Hamilton 400 was held a couple of weeks ago. Those of you who have grown up down up know of the 40 year old tussle between Holden and Ford that culminates each year at the Bathurst 1000. The series is known as the V8 Supercars. Unlike NASCAR, it has retained since 1960 the Stock car format, which means that the cars must come off a normal factory assembly among many other rules. The upshot is that these cars can be purchased for road use (albeit detuned) from such tuners as Holden Special Vehicles. What this means is that the racing is far more exciting than NASCAR because the cars are real family saloons that we drive to work and the racing is far more visual than what you can expect from a NASCAR race.

I have just purchased a Canon XL1S Video Camera and I intend to put it to good use. Getting broadcast quality video on a budget of $5000 is difficult but not impossible so I thought I would share with everyone a series of posts on how I got my rig going for corporate and video blogging work.

Choosing what system to go with is based upon experience and what you want to achieve. I have already invested substantially in Canon Digital Camera gear especially lenses (EF and EFS) as well as flashes, tripod (Manfrotto) I was looking for some over lap with this. Which basically means the Canon XL series Professional camcorders. The Canon system means that the accessories that you purchase for the XL1S can be used in the XL2 and HD products including the lenses, lighting and audio system. Secondly Canon fully supports the DV Firewire standard for computer connectivity which is built into each Mac computer, my choice for Non Linear Editing (NLE). All the Canon products work out of the box with Mac equipment without the need for loading drivers

A rule of thumb is that you will spend an equal amount on accessories as you will for the camera itself as not only is the camera important, but lighting and audio are just as important. I will post in a series on the camera and the setup I built.
