Chevy Channels Lada

Chevrolet has licensed it’s name (and presumably other stuff) to the Russian number-two automaker, AvtoVAZ, the owner of the Lada brand. Based on the Lada Niva, the Chevy Niva is one of the most popular SUVs in former eastern bloc selling around 45,000 units per year.

The Niva is not going to win any styling awards and with the 95hp 1.8L four cylinder, it is not going to win any races either. The interior can best be described as a soviet era Moscow apartment with copious amounts of grey cloth and plastic fittings.
The Chevy Niva presents an interesting fact about the Russia market. Much like the Indian market, there is a need for simple straight forward useful vehicles like the Niva that can be maintained without costly diagnostic equipment. The Niva can be maintained by remotely located mechanics in Uzbekistan unlike the 4 Wheel drive vehicles in the west that carry as much electronics as the space shuttle.
The Chevy Niva may not be an example of automotive technology at it’s best, but it does serve a purpose, cheap easy to fix vehicles for that frosty night in Siberia.

Very interesting how the market dictates the type of cars being developed. Not that this is a surprise for Russia, however I would argue that the U.S. market is just as badly in need of something like this yet there are cultural boundaries.

Interesting … I wasn’t aware those were selling in Eastern Europe.
It’s a decent vehicle. You’re right about Western Vehicles having more electronics than a space shuttle (LOL). Electronics that usually break
Most of the gadgets and gizmos on Western vehicles are un-necessary. I suppose in Russia all most people are looking for is a nice basic machine that gets from A to B.

As a chevrolet dealer in Buffalo, I’ll argue that this car would be a hard sell in the states. It’s interesting to consider the visual styling difference between US vehicles and those overseas. The theory behind the car is sound though. We could use a stripped down car or two over here…it would just have to be styled a bit more akin to the US car look.
Wow, Chevy having a tie up with Lada. Wouldn’t have been my first choice but 45,000 units a year is impressive in anyones books.
Just goes to show that necessity does indeed breed invention

45k per year is definitely significant….who would have picked this tie though! Chevy and Lada…opposite ends of teh scale I would have thought!

I’ve had a lada for over 10 years now and its been the most reliable car I’ve ever owned. I know they do have a bit of a “grandpa” reputation but it never lets me down…
Well VW Audi bought Skoda and seems to be doing good with it. So why not Chevy and Lada, I say. Hope it works out.

I agree with the comment above. It was not so long ago that Skoda was a name everyone outside of Russia would laugh at. There were many jokes about the poor quality of the cars. When they got taken over the car was transformed and now Skoda is a name to be reckoned with.

hopefully this works
ReadWriteWeb that gives some good details
Umm Okay….
Youre right when you say these cars are;t going to win any style competitions but they do “keep on truckin” for a long time. My uncle has had one for over 15 years now, its done over 400,000k and its still going perfectly – he does take very good care of it but its still pretty amazing. Hes had it since it was new!

This Chevy might be the ugliest I have ever seen. Reminds me of old cars from Russia or East Germany in the 80s.
