Air NZ Wine Awards 2010 (Video)
The Air New Zealand Wine Awards is the premier wine competition in New Zealand. It recognises excellence in winemaking throughout the country. The competition organised by New Zealand Winegrowers, the national organisation for the country’s 1,300 grape growers and winemakers.
107 gold medals have been awarded at this year’s Air New Zealand Wine Awards – the highest in the Awards’ history and up five from the 102 awarded last year. Pinot Noir received the most gold medals for the third year in a row (32), the most ever awarded for this varietal, followed by Sauvignon Blanc (14) and Chardonnay (14).
Pure medals were introduced in 2007 to acknowledge medal-winning wines that are 100 per cent sustainably grown and produced. Of the gold medals awarded this year, almost 40 per cent (39.2) are pure gold medals. “In addition, 13 of the 14 gold medals in the Sauvignon Blanc class are pure gold medals,” Mr Yorke said.
From this year, wines grown and entered from the 2010 vintage onwards had to be 100 per cent sustainably produced in both the vineyard and winery. This only applied to wines entered from the 2010 vintage. The introduction of the new criteria led to an increase of almost 140 per cent in sustainable entries over last year – moving from 261 to 621.
The 2010 Air New Zealand Wine Awards gala dinner will be held at SKYCITY Convention Centre on Saturday 20 November 2010

Thanks for sharing some information about this. I didn’t know that New Zealan produce quality and tasty wine. I must try it myself.
The quality of sustainable wines entered is also very exciting as reflected in the high number of pure gold medals awarded.
New rules this year stipulated that wines from the 2010 vintage onwards had to be 100 per cent sustainably produced in both the vineyard and winery.
Probably I have never drink any wine produced in New Zealand. I have to buy some next time.

Congratulations NZ… We filled out our expression of interest and then got invited to emigrate. In the USA if you go to a wine store, and say NZ, they will say Sauv Blanc… but we have been to wine country in NZ and found the pinos to be superior to california. They are more delicate, old world, and divine. I think it is YOUR fault though. When we were in Marlborough we saw a lot of property covered in Sauv… you should focus on your pinos. Lets just say, despite that fact, you have a great entrepreneurial spirit– look at what a small country you are- in our wine store, there is a french, south america, italian, german, NEW ZEALAND, Australian, and other imports section. I think you make like 4% of all wine in our wine stores. Wow
Speaking of entrepreneurs… my wife and I started a site for NZ pet owners. Check it out: http://VetLIVE.co.nz [Ask a vet]
P.S. We love Kiwis. If you email blog@vetlive.com, we will send NZ citizens a 10% off coupon code.
