The people you want to talk to is the Department of Conservation otherwise known as DOC. They are responsible for the parks. If you are going to Abel Tasman, you will go through Queenstown. DOC has a big public office there that will answer all your questions about hiking in New Zealand and how best to prepare yourselves.
