New Zealand (Aoteoroa) has been voted most peaceful country in the world according to the 2009 Global Peace Index Report released today.
New Zealand scored top position thanks to its relatively low rate of violence, decrease in military spending and the election of a conservative coalition government last year.
“The centre-right National Party has a strong popular mandate and a robust parliamentary majority by New Zealand’s standards, putting the new Prime Minister, John Key, in a good position to push through his agenda,” according to the report.
The Kiwi nation also got top marks for its homicide rate and the level of respect for human rights.

I live in Norway. Damn, you Kiwis beat us this year, we were first in 2008
Would still love to live in NZ for a few years to see how it compares to Norway!
Hm, where does the U.S fall on these lists? It seems like we are always in the middle of it.

I fully agree that New Zealand is the most peaceful country. First of all, have a look at her location. They can’t really have any enemies at all, because all countries are far away from New Zealand. Except of Australia, but it is peaceful too. Of course low rate of violence is a huge advantage too. I hope to live there few years of my life. Thanks for the interesting article!

Well, the US sure ain’t on that list! What am I doing staying here then….maybe I should reconsider and make it to one of the top ten! I used to live in Canada for a few years and it truly is more peaceful…which is so less stressful and relieving.
That’s great for New Zealands reputation as a clean, green and peaceful country. Being a New Zealander living in France I love hearing these types of things about my home country.

USA is number 83 on the list. You can follow the link. It is in good company with Khazistan and Rwanda.
Well coming from the UK I am not surprised that we are not on the list. It is so hectic especially in London. I had New Zealand or Canada on my list of chilled out places. It is good to see they both feature.
