Wellington New Zealand [photostream] has been voted by residents as having the highest quality of life of all major metropolitan areas in New Zealand. 94.9% of the residents ranked their quality of life as good or extremely good.

The Quality of Life survey released April 6th, asked residents in 12 cities to rank their lives in areas including health, crime and safety, and public transport. According to the NZ Stuff:

“Wellington is a proper city it is not a big city but it is really close to nice, wild places like the south coast. It is that mixture that we like,” Mr Popinet said.

The couple said they would not consider living anywhere else.

Wellington and Auckland, the two largest cities in the world consistently rank high in the world for quality of life according to the Mercer Quality of Living Global City Rankings. In 2008 Auckland ranked 5th after Zurich, Vienna, Geneva and Vancouver and Wellington ranked 12th just after Copenhagen.

Other cities should not take umbrage  because all of the cities ranked 89% or above for quality of life.

The top rankings are as follows:

  • Wellington 94.9%
  • Dunedin 94.2%
  • Christchurch 93.1%
  • Rodney – 92.8%
  • North Shore 92.3%
  • Auckland 91.7%
  • Waitakere 91.2%
  • Porirua 91.1%
  • Tauranga 91%
  • Hutt 90.9%
  • Hamilton 90.2%
  • Manukau 89.4%
  • Rest of NZ average 92.3%

I have to agree absolutely! I was born & raised in Wellie but have not lived in NZ for a long time. Growing up there were a million ways to enjoy yourself. Some weekends we just caught the ferry over to Picton, else we hiked and rode horses around Maraka, up to the Kapiti coast only 30 miles away or over the Rimatakus to Masterton…all within a couple of hours! Wellingtonians are by far the most educated, travelled and friendliest people in NZ. I should know has have travelled every inch of her and lived in Takapuna, Auckland’s North Shore for 8 years….no comparsion people wise. The biggest thrill of all was returning from overseas and coming into land at Twlight, just when all the City lights came on…brought tears to my eyes…Wellie harbour looked majestic as good as anywhere else in World including HongKong harbour.
Wellingtonians would survive any place else in the World easily, second to none. The whole education system there teaches invaluable life skills and extensive knowledge for life of the World. Thankyou from the heart Wellington!

    Kiaora Kiwibloke,

Thanks your response. I tried to edit my post to correct the spelling of Rimutakas but couldn’t…sorry for that! I still have two sisters and two brothers in Wellie. Next time I’m there I’m going to do the overnight harbour trip with dinner. The boat belongs to one of my fav hotels..the old Wellesly on Willis. I’m very proud of the fact that Wellie is also the IT capital of Asia Pacific, is a major Financial player in the region. The film industry is striving and LOVE ‘The flight of the Concords’
