I remember only one Hangi I attended when I was very young.
It was held in the States in honor of the NZ tradition. I remember that someone had flown some kumara in to go along with the steamed lamb, beef and carrots.
And, of course, the men were using beer as fuel, and having a grand old time.
Life in New Zealand has always been portrayed to me as idyllic.
It may not be as good as I imagine, but it has to be pretty good.
One has to be careful about the imagination. Nothing in this world ever seems to be as good or as bad as we can imagine it.
In the long run though, imagination is one of man’s greatest gifts.

they look so organized and enjoying what they do. This is one good thing about New Zealand, they have a lot of cultural diversity going on with their people
Hangis?…….hangis? in Australia we do things a little different. Try this recipe on for size and I guarantee you’ll get invited to all the local hangis.
1 Take a large cabbage and hole out the centre to about middle finger deep and about 2 fingers round. Use a very sharp small knife to take out the stalk.
2 Add 1/3 garlic butter (heavy, heavy garlic)- about 4 tablespoons
3 Next layer, add diced bacon mixed with oyster sauce
4 Top layer is garlic butter that overflows over the top and outside layers of cabbage.
Place the cabbage in the middle of the hangi (next to the potatoes) DO NOT alfoil as it ends up just like a boiled cabbage!
And as we say around our Aussie hangis, “bewdy feed mate!” Guarantee you’ll get invited to the next 5 hangis with your secret Ngati Skippy tribe recipe!

They look so industrious and having lots of fun. We here in the Philippines, we do plant palays in groups so as to form a straight line. Also, we harvest them together and thats makes it enjoyable, to work with people close to your culture and heart! Like in the picture above, New Zealand really has a lot to offer
