Zune Player

Although Microsoft was busy being quitely confident about the first weeks sales taking 2nd place behind the ubiquitous IPod, the Zune dropped to 5th place in the second week behind the 2nd place SanDisk, 3rd place Creative and fourth place Memorex.

Zune captured 2.1 percent of the portable music player market, dropping from 9% in the first week as the initial interest wore off.

Zune did OK in the first week and OK in the second week, but they haven’t had any major impact on Apple,” Baker said. Apple held 75 percent of the U.S. media player market for the nine months through September, according to NPD.

Microsoft’s Zune Drops to Fifth in Music Player Sales – Bloomberg

The Zune player is suffering from poor reviews and overall low opinion of Microsoft’s first player effort. As predicted, the sales of Microsoft Zune are largely coming from alternative (to the iPod) player market as customers look for a non ipod solution.

At $249 however the product is near the top end of the market where the consumers are more sophisticated in what their tastes and needs are.

Zune Amazon

Over at Amazon the Zune player continues to slide having spent all week between 60 and 80 on the electronics list, and currently successfully fending off sales from the Sony Shower Radio.

However what Microsoft now has is a lot of feedback about how to improve their product to more effectively compete with the iPod however come January and Mac World, it may be too late.
